See Spot Scam

Category: Uncategorizedadmin @ 2:01 am

Well, by now it may be easy for you spot a scam.  At least that is what we are hoping for!  Our last post featured a scam from the “Texaco Petroleum Oil Company Limited” if you would choose to believe so.  For the many of you that are aware of the typical forms of a scam it may not surprise you to see the name of a “trusted” company. Many scammers will send an email for a company they believe you will recognize in hopes that you feel as if you can trust the information provided.  Don’t fall for this trick!  A professional company would not send you an email asking for all of your personal information.

The second part of the email is a request for your information.  As you know, scammers are out to get your money and your personal information.  In this case, the scammer is requesting your name, address, mobile phone number, etc.  Very suspicious!

There are many days in which you can receive an email scam.  The best thing you can do is to pay attention and always read every email with caution.  Learn to safeguard your information and always be on alert.

Hackers Are Everywhere!

Category: Uncategorizedadmin @ 7:47 pm

I recently had a discussion with a friend that lives in the United States that thought hackers only lived abroad.  That is far from true!  I think it is safe to say that there are plenty of hackers that live just about everywhere in the world including the United States.  Now, of course that is just an assumption, but I think it might be a safe one to make.

When you get an email from a hacker that person could really be anywhere in the world.  In many cases unless they tell you where they are located you would never know. And, really would you believe them even if they did tell you.?  Hackers are not trying to be your friend!  They are trying to steal your information and/or infiltrate your computer system for one reason or another.

Regardless of where the hacker or where the email orginated you must always be on alert. As always read each email with caution.  Email scams generated by email hackers can come from just about anywhere.  Remember to avoid those scams and never open any type of suspicious attachment.

Have a great weekend everyone and stay away from those scams and hackers!

Well, What Would You Do?

Category: Uncategorizedadmin @ 4:53 am

From the very first second that I saw this email I new she was hacked.  Why you ask?  Well, first of all a very similar situation happened to me.  I was hacked not to long ago and a message was sent to everyone on my contact list that featured a story much like the one you just read.  Second of all, I knew that my dear friend home since I spoke to her the day before and she did not desperately need my help.

This is a common form of an email scam you might see when a friend or collegue’s email account is hacked.  The scammer is hoping to that you respond quickly and offer some type of monetary assistance.  As always, beware! Even though the email appears to be from a friend it may not be!  If you do anything, avoid responding to the email and reach out to your friend directly via phone.

By doing this you can ensure your friend is safe and you can avoid any type of interaction with a potential scammer. Read each email with caution regardless of who the supposed sender is.  Today, more and more of us are getting hacked so we need to be aware.

Have a great weekend and have email scams!

A Friend Was Hacked

Category: Uncategorizedadmin @ 4:46 am

Well, a friend of mine was recently hacked and I received this email in my inbox.  This is not the first email I have received like this and I am sure it will not be the last.  If you received an odd email from a friend like this one below (when you knew they were safe at home and not traveling) what would you do?

Hope you get this on time, I made a trip to Aberdeen, Scotland and had my bag stolen from me with my passport and credit cards in it. The embassy is willing to help by letting me fly without my passport, I just have to pay for a ticket and settle Hotel bills. Unfortunately for me, I can’t have access to funds without my credit card, I’ve made contact with my bank but they need more time to come up with a new one. I was thinking of asking you to send some funds via Western Union to my travel agent in California so he can expedite my travel arrangements.

I can forward you details on how you can get the funds to him. You can reach me via email or on Blue Island hotel front desk phone, the numbers are, +447031804805 or +447031804806.

I await your response….

All Day?

Category: Uncategorizedadmin @ 6:49 pm

If you visit any public spot you will find people on their smart phones.  On the street, in restaurants, bars, and just about everything there are people glued to their phones. In just a few moments of watching how many people use their phones to communicate and stay in contact with friends, family, and co-workers you begin to wonder how we ever survived without the smartphone.

We know the smartphone changed the way we lived, but it also changed how many hours of the day we are subjected to scams.  Email scams can appear in our inboxes daily and if you we are always connected to our email (in and out of the house) then technically we are constantly exposing ourselves to scams.  Interesting theory, right?!?

Well, if you are an individual that can’t take a moment away from your smartphone than try and be aware of what you are reading. Take time and put thought into any email you read or answer on your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer. Many of us tend to fly through emails when we used hand held devices so remember to watch out for scams every time you access your email.

Nigerian Scam Example

Category: Uncategorizedadmin @ 5:11 am

Example of a Nigerian Email Scam.

My Beloved friend,

Please read this slowly as this might be one of the most important mails that you would ever get this year. It is with tears and pains that I write this e-mail from my sick bed in a hospital. I believe you have never met such a condition before. My name is Mrs. Lemochi Aziha, widow to late Mr. Hasrul Aziha who died in the year 2003.

I had a stillbirth due to the carelessness of the doctors and therefore lost my son at childbirth. .As i speak to you, i have been diagonal zed with Esophageal Cancer, of which the doctors have confirmed and told me that i would not live for more than six months.

I am 60 years old, suffering from long time cancer of the breast. From all indications, my condition is really deteriorating and it’s quite obvious that I won’t live more than 6 months according to my doctors. This is because the cancer stage has gotten to a very bad stage. I don’t want you to pity me rather all I need is your trust.

During the period of our marriage, we could only produce a male child whom we still lost at child birth. After my husband passed away, i took over his company which generated a total sum of $10,500,000 united states dollars. As i write to you, i feel the money would be a waste after i die and that is why i have decided to donate the money to charity and the less privilege across the world.

Please my dear friend, i have come to you to carry out this last wish of mine because i am currently in the hospital where i am receiving treatment and also because i want my soul to find peace with God once i live this earth.

The funds will be entirely in your hands to manage it and I hope God gives you the wisdom to touch very many lives as this is my main concern. 40% of the funds would go to you for your time and effort while the remaining 60% would go to charity and the less privilege.

If you wish to help me you can write me back at your earliest convenience so that i can direct you to my attorney who would be of assistance to you in the transfer of the funds to your account.

Thank you and God bless you.

Mrs. Lemochi Aziha

The Mystery Attachment

Category: Uncategorizedadmin @ 2:27 pm

Sure, sure there are many different types of scams going around today.  Some include plenty of words and details while other keep it simple and often mysterious.  If you receive an email with no content and a simple attachment do you know what to do?  The answer is simple… hit delete!

At no time should you ever open a mystery attachment.  Hackers are known to mass email attachments that once opened can destroy your computer or search your files for personal information.  Sounding familiar?  When was the last time you received an email with no content and a file attached called ” No Name” or something similar?  Chances are that very attachment could of interfered with your hard drive or sent your bank account or other sensitive information you have saved to the hacker.

Variations are now being seen with four attachments instead of one.  This can only be an indication that the hackers are trying to increase their odds of you downloading from one to one in four.  Always be aware when you receive any type of suspicious email rgardless of the content.

Staying well-versed in all types of scams can help you know when to hit delete and walk away.
